Pau Gasol and Yao MingCan you feel the love? The string of big men continues in the Dropping Dimes fantasy mock draft. Pau Gasol may fly under the fantasy radar because he missed 22 games at the beginning of last season with a busted left foot, but he could be worth getting picked this high. Teaming up international stars, Gasol and Yao Ming is a solid foundation to dominate big ball play and gig men that average 20-10 in fantasy b-ball are hard to find - not harder then finding a sober story of Lindsey Lohan, however. In two center leagues, securing two all-star centers in arguably the weakest position in regards to depth can be a solid investment. When other GM’s may be forced to draft a center later in the draft, you will have the luxury to draft the best available player.

Nothing beats a healthy YaoRare is it that you can find a big man in fantasy hoops that doesn’t hurt you in any statistical categories.  Most just decimate your free throw percentage, while some turn the ball over about four times a game, and some can’t block shots.  Let’s face it…the center in fantasy hoops is just a necessary evil.  Fantasy owners are typically stuck with players that they wouldn’t own for any other reason but because they have to fill up a center spot.

The player that I’m choosing with the 12th overall pick could easily go in the top eight if he would just be able to stay healthy.  If you take his per-game averages, he’s one of the best players in the league.  You stretch said numbers out by the number of games he’s managed to play over the past few seasons, and it’s not so great.

However, given the lack of depth at the position and my despise for players that kill your free throw percentage, I’m taking a swing at one of the riskier health-bets in the league.

Yao Ming, C, Houston Rockets

Dirk Nowitzki MVP

Dirk Nowitzki followed a MVP season with a less than stellar performance in the playoffs. In this year’s playoffs, the Dallas Mavericks were facing elimination in Game 6 in Golden State, Dirk went 4-for-16 from the field and finished the game with a disappointing 14 points and 12 rebounds and no threes. The #1 seeded Mavs were eliminated by the 8th seed Golden State Warriors and Dirk Nowitzki was racked over the coals for his lack luster performance. The performance was almost as bad as his favorite German pop star, David Hasselhoff, drunk eating pizza off the kitchen floor. Fantasy ballers do not care too much what happens in the playoffs, it is the performance in the regular season that is important.

Description Time to look ahead to the fantasy playoffs! Although there is definitely a luck factor in head-to-head play, these leagues are a lot of fun. This primer assumes your weekly match-up starts on the Monday of the week, and ends on the Sunday. In Yahoo! leagues, the h2h playoffs start during Week 22, March 26-April 1. These leagues also tend to extend championship week to include the few days at the end of the season. So below, you will see a “Week 24+” designation, which includes games to be played between April 9th and April 18th.

Use this primer to evaluate your current roster and each player’s fantasy playoff schedule. Manipulating the number of games played in each playoff week could be the edge you need to win your fantasy league. Is Lebron the guy to bring you the bling-bling? Check it out below to find out!

Yao Ming can't play, but he can modelI am back like Jack Bauer! Unlike Jack’s dramatic return from a Chinese prison, I was freed (booted?) from my parent’s basement. Now semi-acclimated to life on my own (thank god for the microwave!), I am ready to make a contribution to Dropping Dimes. Thanks to Dennis, Sarge, and Alvin for holding down the DD fort.

What the heck did I miss? What is up with all the injuries to key fantasy players?! In all my years in fantasy basketball, I don’t remember a season where so many players have been knocked out with injuries like a Mirko Cro Cop high kick (He is going to wreck havoc in the UFC!). In one of my leagues, a GM lost his top four picks to injuries (Chris Paul, Yao Ming, Josh Smith and Rashard Lewis). The poor GM had his playoff hopes dashed in the month of December. Them’s the breaks. In this edition of the Injury Lowdown I will give a quick rundown of key injuries and some players to keep an eye on.
